Early Christian

Something that I learned from this chapter was how religion truly influenced design and construction. Not only were religious elements represented throughout many interiors (i.e. crosses, shepherds, etc.), but they were also influenced in a spatial sense because buildings were built larger due to increasing believers.  Below is a picture (from the lecture) that shows how the buildings were expanded to accommodate more people.

Favorite Architecture, Furniture, and Interior Design
The Sant' Apllinare in Classe-Ravenna is one of my favorite interiors from this period. The detail that must have went into this piece of architecture is amazing to me, which is the reason that I consider it to be my favorite.

The stools below are my favorite pieces of furniture from this period. I really enjoy how they are based off of the Roman's style of furniture, but just are a bit more detailed and adorned with different things.

Current Applications
Motifs from the Early Christian period are seen in today's world in multiple ways. Crosses are seen in the world of design as well as fashion. Below is an example of how crosses are implemented into fashion today.

Basilica style churches are a direct result of Early Christian architecture. They were first seen in this time period and are constantly being redone and modernized in today's world.

Student Response
Lindsay'spost on Early Christian was extremely interesting because she visited the catacombs. Researching and looking at various pictures of the catacombs is breathtaking to me, therefore I really enjoyed reading her about her overall experience. I can only imagine how strange yet intriguing experiencing these wonders first hand must be because they are underground, secluded, and tightly packed yet so detailed and handled with care.

John also wrote about the catacombs, but he introduced an aspect of them that I was not familiar with; I learned that they were also used to hold many people such as: soldiers, smugglers, and the homeless. It is intriguing to see the many uses of something that we consider to be one dimensional or for one use only.
