There were a lot of things that I
learned about the Gothic era. One thing that really stuck out to me was that
the black plague killed 75 million, which was one third of the population at
that point in time. When the word Gothic comes to mind, one generally thinks of
depressing or sad things; this time period could not have more of an
appropriate name in my opinion because of all of the people that had passed
away. Another thing that I found interesting from this time period is that
churches were considered to be the center of city life. The reason that this is
interesting to me is because churches are far from being the center of city
life in the modern world. This shows how different the world is now in
comparison to the Gothic time period

Interior Design
The
first piece of architecture that I really enjoyed was Notre Dame at Chartes.
Both the interior and exterior of this building are truly remarkable and it is
amazing that this was constructed so long ago. The detail and precision that
went into both the inside and outside of this structure is amazing. The second
piece of architecture that I enjoyed was Notre Dame at Paris. Prior to this
presentation, I was not familiar with either of these buildings and the
interiors and exteriors really impressed me.

This week, I looked at Desiree and Emily's blog. Desiree's blog really interested me because she talked about how the Gothic period was somewhat of an extension of the Romanesque period until they started to come out with characteristics of their own. Now that I think of it, these two time periods did have a lot in common but there are major differences that set them apart as well.
Emily's blog was very interesting as well. Emily discussed how churches were considered the center of city life (during the time of the deathly plague) and how the main focus when constructing these cathedrals was making them as luxurious and as close to a heavenly experience as possible.
