The Americas

Because I studied Spanish all throughout junior high and high school, I am very familiar with the different cultures of the countries that make up the Americas. Although I studied this region for a fairly log period of time, I was never introduced to information on the artwork from these time periods. A lot of the artwork from this period had symbols and signs on them, which make them very appealing to the eye. Also, they contain images of butterflies, birds, and flowers which come off as delicate, yet strong because of the materials that were used.

For this blog post, I decided to focus mainly on Aztec design  because this is something that I am really interested in.  Because I learned so much about Chiche'n It'za in Spanish class, it has always been a dream of mine to be able to visit it someday. I have a trip planned to Cancun this summer and during the time that I am there I am going to be able to go on a tour of the temple, which is something that I am way too excited about!

I looked at Emily and Samantha's blog posts this week. Samantha's blog really interested me; she had a lot of information about the various civilizations that were covered from this time period. She also had great examples of current applications from this time period. One that I really enjoyed was the one pictured on the right. The different lines and shapes that are achieved are quite remarkable. The use of color and space is also extremely interesting. I liked Emily's post on current applications of Aztec design. She featured clothing that is of Aztec style and is very popular it the world of fashion today. The different prints and colors that are seen in the picture that Emily used (on the left) really portrays the Aztec culture through the patterns (on both the dress and shoes) along with the color scheme that is used.
